Taylor Frankie Paul's "Bachelorette" Season PULLED!
Cancellation Prompted by 2023 Video Airing
From Deadline
|
Taylor Frankie Paul's turn as the star of The Bachelorette has come to a screeching halt after ABC opted to shelve the premiere.
The reality dating series was supposed to feature the star of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, but after allegations of a domestic violence incident and a video from a 2023 incident in which she is seen physically attacking her ex, the network pulled the show.
"In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of The Bachelorette at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family," Disney noted in a statement.
Following the news that the reality series would not air as planned, Paul's suitors have taken to social media to share their reactions.
- Doug Mason shared on his Instagram Stories, "In light of everything that's happened, I'm just sending out prayers to Taylor because that was her moment and her moment was blocked. All we can do right now is be hopeful. Let's stay positive and show nothing but support for people in need."
- Malik Evans also
took to Instagram Stories and wrote, "I'm doing okay. Hope to share more soon. Thank you to everyone who has reached out."
- Matthew Carroll reposted a video which shared the news of the momentary cancelation and added, "On pause for now. Thank you for everyone's support and thoughtful messages."
- Johnnie LaRossa said, "Appreciate everyone reaching out. Grateful for the experience. I've gotta say the group of guys were truly unbelievable. Nothing but respect for them. Love you boys, and any woman would be lucky to have each and every one of them!" Clayton Johnson wrote, "I can honestly say this was one of the best groups of men I've ever been around. So much integrity, respect and heart across the board. Even the tough moments never took away from that. Any woman would be lucky to be with any of these guys."
So far, ABC hasn't said whether Season 22 of The Bachelorette will ever see the light of day.
Deadline reports that Disney even yanked the first episode off its press screening site around midday Thursday as the internal decision was made to pause this season's rollout.
A spokesperson for Paul says in a statement obtained by PEOPLE, "Taylor is very grateful for ABC's support as she prioritizes her family's safety and security. After years of silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation, Taylor is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm."
"There are too many women who are suffering in silence as they survive aggressive, jealous ex-partners who refuse to let them move on with their lives. Taylor has remained silent out of fear of further abuse, retaliation and public shaming. She is currently exploring all of her options, seeking support, and preparing to own and share her story."
This follows a bad 12 months for The Bachelor franchise after it parked The Bachelorette last season and fired the franchise's two top showrunners for their part in a "toxic" workplace. This was meant to be a triumphant return for the female-led version of the stalwart series, this time featuring a famous face from another popular Disney reality franchise, Hulu's The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.
News broke earlier this week that filming had paused on Season 5 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives due to a domestic assault investigation involving Paul and Dakota Mortensen. Both are regularly featured on the reality show, and very often their tumultuous relationship is on full display, particularly in Season 4, which filmed in the fall.
A video that surfaced Thursday shows Paul, in 2023, repeatedly trying to physically attack Mortensen and throwing several metal barstools at him while a child is present, an incident that eventually led Paul to plead guilty to aggravated assault. Draper City Police Department confirmed that there is an open "domestic assault investigation" involving the pair with allegations "made in both directions." Paul also alleged wrongdoing on Mortensen's part in the 2023 case.
During a press dinner Monday night, Paul was asked about the news, to which she said: "Honestly, just like, my heart hurts to see it, to go through it, especially at this time. Just the timing is hard, and it's a big deal. I feel like every premiere that I've experienced, I've never enjoyed fully, so this is another one. … It's extremely hard, and it took everything to get me here today."
This is not the first time that the Bachelor franchise has been mired in scandal. In fact, it's far from it. That said, none of the previous scandals has resulted in an entire season of the show being scrapped just days before its premiere date.
ABC could be out tens of millions of dollars if it can't find a way to salvage "The Bachelorette," according to sources familiar with the show (and the current predicament it finds itself in). That includes license fees to Warner Bros. Unscripted TV, marketing dollars and other loss of revenue.
The last-minute pre-emption causes a host of problems — especially because it doesn't own the show, with comes from Warner Bros. TV Group. Warner Bros. distributes the show internationally to outlets like Rogers' Citytv in Canada, so it wasn't clear on Thursday if "The Bachelorette" might still wind up on TV somewhere. (While ABC had immediately scrubbed Paul and "The Bachelorette" from its website by Thursday afternoon, it still appeared on the Citytv+ website, for example.)
According to insiders, Warner Bros. execs are taking a wait-and-see approach to what is happening, while staying in contact with ABC. (The studio gets paid the show's license fee regardless of whether the show ever airs.)
Sources at the studio were shocked by the video, having found out about it at the same time ABC did on Thursday morning. And yet, some can't say they were surprised by the sudden turn of events. According to sources, Warner Bros. had concerns with casting Paul, given her well-known history of domestic violence — after all, it's documented at the very start of "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives."
ABC is expected to air reruns of American Idol in its place on Sunday.
ABC, in crisis mode after yanking "The Bachelorette" Season 22 premiere from its schedule amid domestic violence investigations involving star Taylor Frankie Paul, moved quickly to delete as much promotional material for the show as it could from its own website.
Within hours of ABC's announcement, the network had removed the Season 22 trailer (captioned "Dare we say… the most dramatic season of 'The Bachelorette' yet?"); Paul's bio and the rest of cast list; and an article plugging "The Bachelorette: Before the First Rose" special preview episode that aired on ABC after the Oscars on March 15. (For now, that episode is still available on abc.com and Hulu; it's set to expire on Monday, March 23, according to the info on Hulu.)
However, as of Variety's writing, the show's trailer and dozens of other video clips and photos remained live on internet platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.
On YouTube, the Bachelor Nation on ABC channel has a playlist of 33 videos, including the trailer (with more than 1.1 million views). The Bachelorette account on TikTok also still features videos promoting Season 22. On Instagram and Facebook, ABC's official accounts for "The Bachelorette" on Thursday reminded fans that Season 22 was scheduled to premiere on March 22.
"Attention, Bachelor Nation: #TheBachelorette is now on Sundays! Don't miss the season premiere this Sunday on ABC. Stream on Hulu!" Those posts went live at 11 a.m. Eastern, just under five hours before ABC said it would no longer premiere "The Bachelorette" S22 on Sunday.
As of Friday morning, the tune-in posts were still active, along with dozens of photos and video clips for Season 22.
While we'll never see any of Taylor's bachelors receive a rose from her, there's still a chance that some of them could be chosen for Bachelor in Paradise. Apparently, ABC held an emergency virtual meeting yesterday. All 22 doomed Bachelorette contestants were invited to a Zoom meeting, where production offered up consolation prizes..

CHUCK NORRIS: 1940-2026
"Walker, Texas Ranger" Star Was on "Price", "Contender"
From Deadline |
Chuck Norris, who turned a talent and expertise in the martial arts into a hugely successful Hollywood career that including his long-running signature series Walker, Texas Ranger, died Thursday. He was 86. His death was announced by his family on Instagram. Norris was hospitalized on Thursday in Hawaii.
"It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning," the family posted today. "While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace.
"To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength," the statement continues. "To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family. He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. Through his work, discipline, and kindness, he inspired millions around the world and left a lasting impact on so many lives."
Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, Norris served in the U.S. Air Force as a young man before dedicating himself to training in martial arts. During that time, he developed a friendship with martial arts icon Bruce Lee and moved to Hollywood to train film stars in combat. He later moved in front of the camera and began one of the great action movie star careers.
Aside from a 1970 appearance on the TV dramedy Room 222, Norris' acting career initially focused on the big screen, with 1972's The Way of the Dragon with Lee considered his breakthrough. The pic's climactic fight scene between Norris' Colt and Lee's Tang in Rome's Colosseum is considered a genre classic.
The following years and decades would see his feature film credits grow, with entries including Breaker! Breaker! (1978), Good Guys Wear Black (1978), The Octagon (1980), An Eye for an Eye (1981), Lone Wolf McQuade (1983), Code of Silence (1985), Invasion U.S.A. (1985), The Delta Force (1986), Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection (1990) and the 1984-88 Missing in Action trilogy in which he played a Vietnam-era American prisoner of war who returns to that country to rescue other POWs.
Although many of Norris' films, and his often wooden acting style, weren't critical favorites, he developed a strong fan base that grew from a cult following impressed by his martial arts skills to millions of people thrilled with his action stories.
His signature role came in 1993 when CBS began airing Walker, Texas Ranger, an action series inspired by Norris' Lone Wolf McQuade. In the series, he played Texas Ranger Sgt. Cordell Walker, ex-Marine and Vietnam vet raised on a Cherokee reservation after his parents were murdered. With a combination of martial arts moves and Cherokee hunting skills, Walker was a crime-solving crusader for justice, moral values and a good butt-kicking. The hit series ran for nine seasons, wrapping up in 2001, and spawned both a standalone TV reunion movie (Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire in 2005) and a four-season 2021 CW reboot starring Jared Padalecki.
He parlayed his stature into appearances on "The Contender" and "The Price Is Right $1,000,000 Spectacular".
As with many of his projects, Norris also served as a writer and producer on his series. His stuntman-brother Aaron was a director on the show. Although known for his earnest and usually stoic performance style and screen persona, Norris occasionally let fans know he was in on all the jokes about his strongman reputation, most notably when he played himself in the 2004 comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. In 2012, he played a mercenary in star-laden The Expendables 2.
Still, he took his place in show business and the world at large with considerable intent. In his 1988 memoir The Secret of Inner Strength: My Story, he wrote that his fans "want and need someone to identify with, a man who is self-reliant, stands on his own two feet, and is not afraid to face adversity." He added, "They want to believe in me, just as I believed in John Wayne when I was a boy."
Norris received a number of black belts for his martial arts prowess, including taekwondo, judo, jiu-jitsu and others. He won the Professional Middleweight Karate championship in 1968, a title he'd hold for six consecutive years, and was named Black Belt magazine's Fighter of the Year in 1969.
Norris got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1989 and was among the inaugural class of the Martial Arts History Hall of Fame in 1999.
Norris is survived by wife Gena O'Kelley; children Mike, Eric, Dina, Danilee and Dakota; brother Aaron Norris; and numerous grandchildren.

Wright died in Thailand, and his death was confirmed by ITV and the local foreign office. Local reports said he was found dead March 14 in a concrete drainage system on the Thai island of Phuket. He was discovered by a worker face-down in stagnant water, according to the reports.

Nexstar/Tegna Merger Clears Hurdle
Eight State AGs, DirecTV Files Lawsuit
From Variety |
Nexstar Media Group said it "has closed its acquisition" of Tegna in a $6.2 billion deal that would following approval of the transaction from the FCC and the Department of Justice.
The deal would augment Nexstar, already the biggest TV station group in the U.S., with Tegna's footprint — resulting in a company with 259 full-power stations (after divesting six), variously affiliated with networks including ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. While the deal will give the combined company reach across 80% of U.S. TV households, it will own less than 15% of the 1,777 local TV stations in the country.
Nexstar's announcement comes after eight state attorneys general and DirecTV filed federal lawsuits seeking to block the Tegna takeover, which both alleged that the merger will increase prices for consumers and harm the production of local news.
A day after Nexstar said that it had closed its deal to buy Tegna, creating a broadcasting giant, California and seven other states filed an emergency motion to stop it. The motion for a temporary restraining order was filed Friday in Sacramento, seeking court action to halt integration and consolidation of the two companies.
In approving the deal, the FCC granted the companies a waiver of its ownership-cap rule that prohibits any local station owner from reaching more than 39% of U.S. households. Nexstar has committed to divesting six stations across six different markets as well as "commitments that go to affordability and localism," per the FCC.

Reality Goes Vertical
"SupermodelMe" goes Microdrama with New VErsion
From Variety |
Refinery Media and COL Group Intl. have struck a deal to reimagine hit modelling competition franchise "SupermodelMe" as one of the world's first reality microdrama series.
The new series, titled "SupermodelMe: Make It or Break It," will premiere on COL's global mobile platform FlareFlow in mid-year, with the announcement made at Hong Kong FilMart.
The move marks a milestone for the unscripted television industry: for the first time, an established reality IP is being fully retooled for mobile-native, vertical-format episodic storytelling at this scale.
Created and owned by Refinery Media, "SupermodelMe" ran for six seasons, including an international run on Netflix, and built a following that positioned it as one of the most recognizable modelling competition brands to emerge from Asia.
Thai-American television personality Cindy Bishop, who hosted previous seasons of the franchise, will return as host of the new series, joined by returning judge Ase Wang and co-judge Patricia Gouw.
"'SupermodelMe' has always been about finding raw talent and giving them a real shot," Bishop told Variety. "Going vertical doesn't change that, it just puts us where more people are actually watching shows now: their mobiles. I'm excited to be back, and I'm excited about being part of something so groundbreaking."
"'SupermodelMe' is proof that regionally rooted content can carry universal appeal, and this is the first time a franchise of this caliber has made the move to the vertical format on any major global microdrama platform," added Timothy Oh, general manager of COL Group. "I am excited that FlareFlow is leading that charge. By leveraging COL's depth of experience in the vertical space and FlareFlow's global reach, we are creating the right environment for 'SupermodelMe's' legacy to continue evolving and to introduce the IP to more global, younger, mobile-first audiences."
Karen Seah, founder and CEO of Refinery Media, said: "'SupermodelMe' has always embraced reinvention. From its early beginnings as an online-only series, evolving into traditional long-form television, and now reimagined for vertical storytelling, each chapter has brought the franchise closer to its audience. This partnership allows us to demonstrate how unscripted formats can successfully adapt to vertical storytelling, opening the door for a new wave of micro entertainment."

SAG-AFTRA to Reconvene in June
No Contract Reached Yet
From Variety |
SAG-AFTRA has concluded a month of negotiations with the major studios without reaching a new contract, and will resume talks in June. The outcome was not unexpected, though negotiators had held out some hope that a new contract could be reached in March.
"SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP completed productive bargaining sessions, including going several days beyond what was originally planned," the two sides said in a statement. "While we will continue ongoing conversations, formal negotiations will resume later this spring as planned, before the current contract expires June 30. We thank both negotiating committees for their shared commitment to reaching a fair deal and their thoughtful engagement, including over this entire weekend. We will continue to respect the press blackout and will provide an update in the coming months."
The union began talks on Feb. 9, and originally expected to conclude on March 6. With some encouraging signs, the parties agreed to extend the original schedule by an extra week in hopes of reaching a deal.
The Writers Guild of America negotiations are due to begin on Monday, which functioned as a hard deadline on the SAG-AFTRA talks. The WGA contract expires first, on May 1. After that, the AMPTP is scheduled to sit down with the Directors Guild of America on May 11. Both the DGA and the SAG-AFTRA contracts expire on June 30.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union's executive director, has been leading the negotiations for the union, while Greg Hessinger, the newly installed CEO of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, has been representing the studios.

NBCUniversal
NBCUniversal Bows Out of Syndication
Company to Shift to Distributing Library Content
From the Hollywood Reporter
|
NBCUniversal will no longer produce first-run syndicated TV programming, ending production of shows like Access Hollywood, Access Live, Karamo and The Steve Wilkos Show in a major strategic shift for the company.
Karamo and Steve Wilkos have both completed production, with the new episodes that have been taped airing through the summer. Access Hollywood and Access Live will continue production through the summer before ending their run.
"NBCUniversal is making changes to our first-run syndication division to better align with the programming preferences of local stations," said Frances Berwick, chairman of Bravo & Peacock unscripted for NBCUniversal, in a statement. "The company will remain active in the distribution of our existing program library and other off-network titles, while winding down production of our first-run shows. These shows have provided audiences with great talk and entertainment content for many years and we're very proud of the teams behind them."
Access Hollywood has been in production for nearly 30 years, with its first episode airing in September 1996. Mario Lopez, Kit Hoover, Scott Evans and Zuri Hall are the show's current hosts.
Karamo is hosted by Queer Eye veteran Karamo Brown, and began production in 2022. Steve Wilkos is hosted by Wilkos, the former security guard for Jerry Springer. His show has served as something of a successor to Springer's program, and has been in production since 2007. The two talk shows are produced at NBCU's Stamford Studios facility in Stamford, Connecticut, and the company is expected to vacate the building later in the year.
NBCUniversal has determined that the syndicated studio model is not sustainable, given the preferences of local TV stations, which are programming more local and national news, community-focused programming select national franchises. The decision to essentially shut down syndicated production comes a month after the company announced that The Kelly Clarkson Show would end its run later this year.
Talk shows in general have been coming under both financial and competitive pressure, with rising costs, waning demand and increased competition from other platforms. Video podcasts in particular have filled some of the gap, picking up more celebrity interviews, investigating true crimes and tackling many of the same subjects as their TV predecessors at a fraction of the price.
Access Hollywood, for example, was hit by layoffs last fall in connection with the cancellation of E!'s daily news show.
Still, there is no question that it is the end of an era for NBC, and for entertainment journalism with the end of Access.
The biggest player in the space, CBS' Entertainment Tonight, is still in production, as is Inside Edition and Extra, which is produced and distributed by Warner Bros. The company will continue to distribute its existing program library to stations and other platforms that want it, including titles like Dateline, Law & Order, Chicago PD, Maury, Jerry Springer, Steve Wilkos and Karamo.

Paramount Buys Out Tyler Perry
BET+ to Fold Into Paramount+
From Deadline |
And then there was one. Paramount, which three years ago had three SVOD platforms available in the U.S., will soon have only one. Paramount+ will absorb BET+ at the beginning of June, when more than 1,000 hours of BET+ content – originals, movies, and specials – will migrate to the flagship streamer.
The news was just shared internally by BET Networks President Louis Carr in a memo, a copy of which was provided to Deadline by a Paramount spokesperson.
"This powerful next step ensures the stories we champion, the creators we support and the culture we represent go further than ever before," Carr wrote.
The consolidation – part of the new Paramount leadership's effort to gain scale and improve economics in the streaming space – became possible after Paramount bought out Tyler Perry Studios' ownership in BET+, believed to be 25%. Financial details have not been revealed, but Perry's stake had been valued at tens of millions of dollars.
"As part of this evolution, Paramount acquired Tyler Perry Studios' equity stake in BET+," a Paramount spokesperson said in a statement. "We share the same ambition to expand the reach of BET content, and Tyler will continue to be a valued and important partner through his overall programming agreement."
Perry's most recent nine-figure overall deal with BET Media Group, which was announced in 2024 and goes until 2028, has him delivering hundreds of new episodes to BET and BET+ (now Paramount+) across existing and new series. premiere on BET+.
